Trend Alert: Oxfords

Listen up, ladies: smart is the new sexy. Oxford shoes are in trend right now, and they’re definitely a wardrobe staple.

You may not know this, but oxfords are not the same as brogues. By definition, Oxford shoes are closed-laced, low-cut shoes with flat heels and thin soles. A distinctive feature of the Oxford shoe is its closed lacing. This means that the eyelets are hidden under the front piece of the shoe. Closed lacing gives a more elegant appearance, making the Oxford the go-to formal shoe.

The modern Oxford shoes are evolved from buckled half-boots worn by the students of the famed Oxford University – thus the name. The style gained mainstream favour at the beginning of the 20th century, with the addition of laces that made them easier to wear and remove.

Now, Oxfords are versatile – the variety of designs mean they can be worn for formal, work or sporting occasions. Scroll further for our recommendations – this season’s iterations are anything but boring.

Metallic Oxford shoes, Mango

These shiny patent finish kicks feature a metal finish and backstitched details, upping the luxe factor. A subtle 2.5cm cork platform heel doesn’t hurt, either.

Milanino, Aldo

This cross between a ballet flat and oxford is the perfect gateway drug for first-time oxford wearers. Easy to slip on and off, with an ankle strap and flexible sole, this straddles the line between formal and casual.

Dr. Martens 1461 Mono 3-Eye Oxford, Urban Outfitters

Go classic with Dr. Martens. The brand associated with the punk movement of the late 70’s, Dr. Martens are known for their great quality and lasting use. Put a twist on the oxford with a clean white colour.
