Mean Girls first released in 2004 and immediately reached the upper echelon of cult status. As “grool” and successful — $129 million USD successful — as it was, there’s yet to be a proper sequel (the stand-alone 2011 Mean Girls 2 does not count). But like Gretchen Wieners and “fetch,” Lindsay Lohan is really trying to make it happen.
Fans of the movie have been praying for a sequel for years. Although there was a “Mean Girls 2, it didn’t include any of the leads from the original or Fey. But our prayers have been answered because it turns out that Lindsay Lohan appears to want a Mean Girls sequel as bad as us fans.
“I have been trying so hard to make Mean Girls 2 happen — it is not in my hands,” said LiLo CNN Facebook Live chat. “But I will keep forcing it on them until we do it…I’ve already written a treatment for it, so I just need a response.” , The star also mentioned that she’d like to see Jamie Lee Curtis and Jimmy Fallon in the movie.
However, Fey has been against a sequel.
“It’s too late now,” she told Entertainment Weekly when the magazine did a reunion piece on the movie in 2014.
It turns out Fey and her husband, composer Jeffrey Richmond, have been working on a “Mean Girls” musical. After years on and off the developmental track, a stage musical based on the hit 2004 cult classic is finally getting closer to fruition, with a world premiere scheduled for Oct. 3 at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C.
