As far as fashion trends go, 2016 is definitely the year of the choker. The ’90s trend was first revitalised on the runway from Alexander Wang to Louis Vuitton. Then came the celebrity endorsements by supermodels Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, and Lily-Rose Depp sporting the neck ornament.
Now they are pretty much inescapable, and I, for one, admit that I am one of those laggards hopping onto the bandwagon only now and on the hunt for a choker. However, upon finding out how much a simple black velvet choker would cost me, I “choked” back in sadness. Crazy, but true.

However, thanks to a recent viral Twitter post by Katie Rosebrook — who ingeniously made a choker out of a shoelace — has brought hope to all of us afflicted from not being able to afford one of those chokers above.
Katie Rosebrook tweeted out a photo of the shoelace from her sneakers that she tied around her neck as a choker, saying in the caption that she has “never gotten so many compliments.” Her post has since amassed over 150,000 likes and almost 50,000 retweets.

“I was pretty sure everyone would just wonder why I was wearing a shoelace, but only one person noticed the entire night,” she told Buzzfeed. “I see so many people spend a good amount of money on necklaces like this, and I thought it was funny that mine was free and got so many compliments.”
