Have you ever fret of ‘scarring’ after having a breakout? Dark brown or red patches will remain after the pimple supposedly had healed. Why is this so? Its a common misinterpretation that with the occurrence of an acne, it will turn into a scar.  The brown marks that appear after a pimple had healed are not scars, they are acne marks  or also know as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation are flat red or brown dots. They tend to give an uneven and blotchy skin tone despite the flat look. Acne scars on the other hand are indentations on the skin and are permanent. To get rid of it, fillers would be the best solution to even out the surface of the skin tone. Thereby, we need to learn and distinguish between these 2 post-acne consequences and then we can learn how to treat them.

 Post-inflammatory hyerpigmentation occurs as the consequence of trauma or inflammation to the skin. If you have a darker skin tone, these patches will more likely be brown. However, for a fairer skin tone, the patches will be reddish. According to Savory and Pandaya (2014) post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation takes at least 3-6 months before it disappears. Fortunately, they are not permanent, it will fade away with time. There is no way to avoid these marks after a breakout. What you can do instead, are methods to quicken the process of the acne marks disappearing.

  1. Drink more water!

    8 litres of water is a MUST. Water is essential for hydration. And we all know, well hydrated skin gives off healthy skin! A healthy skin recovers and recuperates faster.

  2. Exfoliation

    Our skin is regenerated everyday. Exfoliating allows dead skin cells to be removed and new ones to be replace on the surface. This means it helps to fade away the dark marks. However, it is advised to only exfoliate your skin once or twice a week because it could dry out the skin. PS, if you already have dry skin, do not exfoliate as it could aggravate the dryness and result in flakiness.

  3. Vitamin C!

    Be it the edible form or a cream/serum to apply on the face, vitamin C is great for lightening the skin tone. This is because, it increases the glutathione in your liver and naturally whitens the skin.

  4. Sunscreen

    Sunscreens are always taken for granted. Exposure to the sun without protection causes skin damage and it might darken your dark spots further. Thereby, make it a habit to add applying sunscreen as a routine in your daily skincare. Click here to know which sunscreen is suitable for you!
